New to Canada? Want to improve your English and meet new people?
If you are 16 years or older and a newcomer to Canada (you’ve been here for less than 5 years), you are invited to participate in our research project about using music-based activities to help newcomers to Canada to learn or improve their English.
Across two sites (Toronto and Montréal), we want to recruit about 30 long-time Canadians and at least 150 people who have lived in Canada for less than five years but want to settle here.
You can:
- Learn English through music activities
- Meet new people
- Support science
- Have a chance to WIN $100
You will participate in one of the following groups (with about 20 other newcomers):
- Choir: sing in English – the choir director works on pronunciation and explains everything new or difficult. It’s a chance to improve your intonation and breathing technique! Delicious snacks provided at the break!
- Conversation Group: listen to music, talk about it and share impressions! You learn in a natural way – expressing yourself and making mistakes in a safe environment. Delicious snacks provided at the break!
- Control group (waitlist): this group makes the research happen. You don’t do any music activities, but you come for five sessions and get some of those delicious treats! You also have the option to join a choir after the research is completed.
When? Saturdays from the beginning of April until end of June (2 hours each week)
Where? Allied Music Centre, Victoria Street
Childcare is available.
